Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has arrived in Iran for a three day visit aimed at improving relations.
al-Maliki is scheduled to meet Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad later on Sunday. Among other things, the two leaders are expected to discuss Iranian concerns about a planned United States military agreement with Iraq. Iran has protested the proposal, which involves establishing a number of permanent US bases in Iraq and allowing American forces autonomy to conduct offensives without consultations with Baghdad. al-Maliki is expected to repeat his government's wish to see Tehran resume a dialogue with Washington over security in his country.
