French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Chancellor Angela Merkel are holding a one-day summit meeting in the southern German town of Straubing.
This comes as France prepares to take over the rotating EU presidency from Slovenia on July 1. Energy policy, including the soaring prices of oil and gas, and climate change were expected to be on top of the agenda. Ahead of the talks, Berlin conceded that there was little hope of resolving a row over European plans to reduce carbon emissions from cars by 2012.
