Some observers believe a coalition of the two big parties, the CSSD and the ODS, would be a good idea. The coalition government, comprising also the Greens (SZ) and the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL), faces serious problems as a few of its MPs oppose it on key issues, such as the property settlement with churches, health care reform and the Czech-U.S.
treaty on the stationing of a U.S. radar base on Czech soil. "We don't have enough votes to deal with the problem ourselves," Paroubek said, referring to the recent unsuccessful no confidence vote that the CSSD initiated in the Chamber of Deputies. "The government is therefore fully responsible for the situation," he added. Paroubek criticised government representatives for allegedly saying the government should be maintained due to the 2009 Czech EU presidency. He said this was a deficient argument and pointed out that the government used the country's reputation as hostage. The CSSD said it repeatedly wanted to discuss the Czech EU presidency, but the government's reaction was always arrogant.
