Merkel said both countries now supported a reduction of carbon emission to 120 grams per kilometre by 2012, as envisaged in the EU plan. However, transitional provisions are to be a lot more flexible to make it easier for carmakers to adapt to the new requirements. France and Germany had long argued over the EU's emissions scheme which would have favoured smaller French cars over larger German models. Monday's deal could prove a breakthrough for a number of issues relating to the EU's climate package and comes as France prepares to take over the rotating EU presidency from Slovenia on July 1.
