10.06.2008 - Czech CSSD to propose extra allowance for pensioners, families

Skromach, CSSD deputy chairman, said the proposal for the one-off extraordinary pension and family allowance has been approved by the CSSD deputies' group today and will be submitted to the government. According to the CSSD, pensioners have received no compensation for the first half of this year for which the government's reform has been in force.

the income gap pensioners have faced as a result of soaring inflation. Skromach said the extraordinary social allowance of 2,000 crowns should be paid out up to the 6,000-crown limit for a family. The families that receive child allowances would receive the extraordinary allowance automatically, the others would have to apply for it, Skromach said. He said the CSSD believes its proposal could be supported by certain deputies for the junior governing Christian Democratic Union (KDU-CSL) and Greens (SZ). If it were also supported by the junior opposition Communists (KSCM), only two to three votes of government deputies would be necessary for the proposal to succeed in the lower house. The CSSD has for a long time criticised the government's reform's impact on pensioners and families with children and called for compensation to be paid out to these groups. The government, led by the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), rejected this and proposed an indexation of pensions as of August 1 when monthly pensions are to rise by 470 crowns. ($1=15.622 crowns)
