Cuban dissidents have warned the European Union that lifting its economic sanctions on Cuba would increase human rights violations on the island.
Next week, the EU will review the sanctions it imposed on Cuba in 2003 for its jailing of 75 dissidents and which were suspended two years later at Spain's request. The Czech Republic is among the countries opposed to the move. Opposition groups there stress that Cuba still holds more than 200 political prisoners, including 55 of those jailed in the 2003 crackdown that triggered the EU sanctions.
