A spokesman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told reporters that the decision was meant to give Egyptian mediators more time to try to reach a truce in and around Gaza. At the same time, Israel's security cabinet has instructed the military to continue preparations for an offensive in case the truce talks fail. The decision came on a day when Israeli forces killed three Palestinians in Gaza. Egypt has spent the past several months trying to mediate a cease-fire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which controls the territory.
