Bush has arrived in Rome, where he has meetings scheduled with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and other leaders. Earlier in the day, the US president held talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel near Berlin. The main topic of their discussions was ways of curbing Iran's controversial nuclear programme. Chancellor Merkel told reporters in Meseberg that Germany favoured imposing fresh sanctions on Tehran unless it complies with international demands for it to halt its uranium enrichment activities.
