Nepal's deposed king Gyanendra has left Kathmandu's main palace to begin life as a civilian in the newly declared republic.
Making his final speech before quitting the palace for the last time, the king said he respected his people's decision to abolish the monarchy. He added that he was prepared to help his nation in whatever capacity he could. Nepal's nearly 250-year-old monarchy was abolished on May 28 by the constitutional assembly, which was set up following a peace deal between Maoist insurgents and mainstream political parties. Gyanendra ascended to the throne in 2001 after a palace massacre in which the then crown prince killed most of the family and then himself.
