... Brown has narrowly won a key vote on plans for tougher terrorism laws. Following months of heated debate, British MPs voted 315 to 306 to approve plans to increase the maximum pre-charge detention period for terror suspects from 28 days to six weeks. Brown claimed that police needed more time to unravel increasingly sophisticated terror plots. Opponents said the planned laws were draconian, unnecessary and likely to antagonise Muslim communities.
