UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is sending a high-ranking UN envoy to Zimbabwe for five days next week to help with the June 27 presidential election runoff.
Haile Menkerios, a former Eritrean ambassador is scheduled to visit Zimbabwe from June 16 to June 20 for discussions on the political situation and the upcoming elections. At the UN food summit in Rome earlier this month, Ban met with Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and won permission to send Menkerios, the U.N. assistant secretary-general for political affairs who is responsible for African issues.
