German Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung has indicated that he is aiming to increase the number of Bundeswehr troops stationed in Afghanistan.
The current German mandate for 3,500 troops runs out in mid October, when parliament must approve a renewal. Speaking on German public radio, the defence minister said he planned to announce his intentions before the parliamentary summer recess begins next month but refused to be drawn on the number. German citizen held by US forces as terror suspect ... to Afghanistan. However, Jung stressed that Germany would continue to focus its efforts on the relatively peaceful north of the country, where it will be providing the Quick Reaction Force from early July after taking over from Norway.
