Polls in Ireland have closed in a referendum on the European Union's reform treaty.

Merkel calls on Irish to approve Lisbon Treaty ... despite an all-out campaign in favour led by Prime Minister Brian Cowen. Ireland is the only member of the 27-nation bloc to put the Lisbon Treaty to the voters. The treaty can only come into force if it is ratified by all EU members. The Lisbon Treaty is meant to streamline decision-making in the bloc. It replaces the EU constitution, which was rejected in referenda in France and the Netherlands in 2005.
