Finance ministers from the world's eight leading industrialised powers are meeting in Japan to discuss the economic threat from soaring food and oil prices.
The price rises have stoked inflation in many countries, raising fears for the world economy, which has already been hit by a major financial crisis. The head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, said on the sidelines of the meeting in Osaka, that the worst of the financial crisis appeared to be over, but that inflation remained a serious problem. The two-day meeting is also expected to focus efforts to tackle climate change, including a proposed fund for technology to combat global warming.
