Afghanistan's Taliban movement has claimed responsibility for a jailbreak in the country's south, which freed nearly 1,000 prisoners.
A Taliban spokesperson said militants used two suicide bombers to blast their way into the compound in Kandahar city, before gunmen on motor cycles stormed the prison. Some 400 Taliban fighters were freed along with hundreds of criminal inmates. Officials said 15 guards were killed in the raid. The attack comes as a blow to President Hamid Karzai, one day after international donors pledged 13.5 billion euros to rebuild Afghanistan at a conference in Paris. Authorities are conducting a search for the escapees and are investigating the possibility of insider involvement in the attack.
