In remarks to appear in this Sunday's edition of the paper Bild am Sonntag, Poettering said that the Irish 'no' vote has pitched the European Union into crisis. EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso denied that the Irish referendum had scuppered the Lisbon Treaty, but said European leaders would meet for crisis talks. More than 53 percent of Irish voters rejected the reform treaty. Ireland was the only EU member to put the Lisbon Treaty to a referendum. Eight other countries are yet to ratify it.
