German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has concluded a three-day trip to China by visiting its earthquake region of Sichuan and promising more help for victims, including German assistance in rebuilding eight schools.
Steinmeier toured a hospital run by the German Red Cross in the town of Dujiangyan and a makeshift school housed in containers. Eighty percent of the town's buildings were damaged by the May 12 quake. Survivors still live in tents lining its streets. Steinmeier said relations between Beijing and Berlin are back on track after being strained last year over Tibet when Chancellor Angela Merkel received the Dalai Lama in Berlin. On Friday Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said the two countries aimed to resume regular talks on human rights, security and economic matters.
