Chadian President Idriss Deby has accused a European Union force stationed in the east of his country of failing to prevent the killings of civilians and refugees by rebels.
Deby's criticism of the 3,700-strong European force (EUFOR), which has a UN mandate to protect nearly half a million civilian refugees in Chad, followed a statement from the rebels saying they had seized the eastern town of Biltine. It was the third town to be attacked in three days by the insurgents, who have pushed westwards from the border with Sudan into eastern Chad. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council both condemned the upturn in attacks by Chadian rebels, with the council warning it would take measures against threats to regional stability.
