Four people have been killed in a gun attack in north-western Pakistan, officials say.

Officials say the gunmen opened fire at the four Shia Muslim men in the main market in the town of Hangu.

The identity of the killers and the motive of the killing remains unclear, according to the police.

The attack comes a day after four people were killed in a bomb explosion outside a Shia mosque in Dera Ismail Khan in north-western Pakistan.

"The men were from the same family and they were killed on the spot," Quresh Khan said.

There have been a number of sectarian attacks in Hangu and other towns in northwest Pakistan bordering Afghanistan recently, reports say.

Shias make up less than 20% of Pakistan's population and thousands of militants from both their community and from the majority Sunni community have been killed in tit-for-tat attacks over the past decade.
