The trial of a former British special forces officer accused of masterminding a failed coup plot in 2004 against the government of Equatorial Guinea has begun.
Simon Mann faces a possible death sentence in the case, which opened under heavy security in the capital, Malabo, on Tuesday. Mann admitted earlier this year to being involved in the plot but said he was not the main man behind it. He was extradited to Equatorial Guinea in January from Zimbabwe after serving four years for trying to purchase weapons without a licence in 2004. A verdict is expected by Thursday.
