Berlin's Mayor Klaus Wowereit has marked the 55th anniversary of the June 17 uprising in East Germany when thousands of workers took to the streets to protest against the Communist regime.
Dozens of protesters were killed in a crackdown by Soviet troops and East German police. Speaking at a commemoration to the victims, the Social Democrat politician said June 17, 1953 was a key date in German history. German Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung (CDU) said June 17 underscored exactly what the GDR stood for -- a dictatorship. Around a million people participated in the protests in around 700 towns and communities.
