Afghan and NATO troops have launched a major operation against Taliban insurgents in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province.
The defence ministry in the capital, Kabul, said at least 20 militants were killed as well as two Afghan soldiers in the offensive in the Arghandab region near Kandahar. The ministry said another three guerrillas died further south. The operation comes after fighters took over villages in Arghandab and about 350 Taliban inmates escaped from a Kandahar jail. Separately, four British soldiers have been killed by a roadside bomb while patrolling in Helmand province.
