18.06.2008 - Czech coalition would lose elections now - poll

The opposition Social Democrats could easily form a coalition with the Communists (114 mandates), the Christian Democrats and the Greens (108 mandates) or only with the Greens (103 mandates). The poll ratings of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS, senior Czech president best assessed politician-poll ...

government coalition party) stood at 24 percent at the beginning of June and those of the Social Democrats at 33.7. As the Christian Democrats would only receive 4.5 percent, they would not cross the five-percent threshold required for the parliament. The Greens are popular with 8.1 percent and the Communists with 11.8 percent of Czechs. The number of the government parties' mandates fell by nine compared to May. The voter turn-out would be 54 percent, while 17 percent said resolutely they would not turn up in the polling stations. According to a poll conducted by the polling institute CVVM and released earlier today, the Social Democrats would win the general election with 37 percent of the vote if it was held now, followed by the ODS with 27.5 percent. The Communists (KSCM), whom 15.5 percent of Czechs supported, were the third most popular party in the poll conducted by CVVM.
