Czech PM wants government to recognise Kosovo on Wednesday -press ... Parkanova (the Christian Democrats, KDU-CSL) said. She said she would like to reward the veterans on the 90th anniversary of Czechoslovakia's establishment this year. According to estimates, there are about 3500 World War Two veterans as well as 16,000 veterans from peace-keeping missions, the 1991 Gulf War, and the missions in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. The notion of veteran is defined by the law as a Czech citizen with a certificate on the participation in the struggle for national liberation in 1939-1945 or at least a 30-day service in a foreign mission. The legislation is yet to be passed by the Senate. The legislation is to prevent access to the certificate of war veterans to those who formally comply with the conditions, but served in an enemy army or collaborated with the enemy. Soldiers from foreign missions who were sacked from the army for some disciplinary reasons will not be included either, Parkanova said. The legislation also changes the payment of the costs of housing, food and services to a war veteran so that it is in keeping with the law on social services. It lowers from 30 to 15 percent the sum that must remain to them after further costs on their stay in a home for veterans is deducted. Parkanova said this would not affect their financial situation. Their pensions reach on average 16,000 crowns monthly, while they pay maximally 7200 crowns monthly for the home for veterans, she added. The Defence Ministry wants to provide a contribution for food to the veterans if they do not want to use the offer of army canteens, Parkanova said. Parkanova said the sum would be the same as that paid to the former career officers who served at the Ministry before they retired, Parkanova said, but she did not disclose the sum.
