Nato and Afghan forces have launched an operation to drive Taleban insurgents from the outskirts of the southern city of Kandahar. Officials said two Afghan soldiers and 23 Taliban militants were killed in initial firefights.
Hundreds of Taliban fighters took over villages Sunday night in the Arghandab district of Kandahar province, posing a threat to Kandahar city, 20 kilometres to the south. Afghan and NATO troops were deployed to the region after about 350 Taliban fighters escaped from a Kandahar jail last week. Meanwhile, the International Security Assistance Force says that four British NATO soldiers have been killed and two more wounded by a roadside blast in Helmand province.
