A six-month truce between Israel and the Palestinian militant organisation Hamas came into effect a few hours ago.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has warned that Israel's military stands ready to act if the truce fails. Heavy fighting in Gaza ... 1.5 million people depend on aid, and stop Israeli raids into the territory. A Hamas official said he was confident all militant groups in Gaza would abide by the deal. The EU presidency, currently held by Slovenia, has urged both sides to respect the ceasefire. Hours before the ceasefire, militants fired 38 rockets and mortars at southern Israel, wounding a women, according to medics. Two Israeli air raids on Gaza left two Palestinian gunmen wounded.
