Afghan and NATO-led forces have reportedly cleared out Taliban militants from the outskirts of Kandahar city in the south of the country.
The provincial governor has said hundreds of insurgents have been killed or wounded in the operation, but NATO has not confirmed this figure. NATO says the operation is expected to last until the weekend. The offensive involves about 800 Afghan government troops backed by hundreds of mostly Canadian NATO soldiers. The mission is targeting around 600 Taliban fighters who have dug in in the Arghandab valley northwest of Kandahar. Insurgents seized seven villages in the district on Monday .
