NATO and Afghan forces say they've attacked Taliban militants in areas outlying Kandahar city in one of the biggest battles in Afghanistan in recent years.

RAF men die in Afghanistan blast ... to the city's northwest. He said two Afghan soldiers and a civilian had also been killed. But NATO spokesmen declined to confirm the casualty estimate and admitted that last week's Taliban infiltration into Arghandad had been a setback. NATO says mainly Canadian soldiers and Afghan troops are progressing "methodically" through the district.
