US merger forms 'largest carrier' ... Emancipation of the Niger Delta has claimed responsibility for the attack. Afterwards, the gunmen came across a separate oil supply vessel and kidnapped its US captain in an apparent opportunistic attack. Rebels have often targeted Nigeria's oil facilities in the past, however mostly in the more accessible parts of the Niger Delta. The attacks have caused production cuts of around 20% in the world's 10th biggest oil producer, contributing to recent increases in the cost of oil.
