Ireland's Prime Minister Brian Cowen has called for more time to resolve the crisis provoked by his country's rejection of the European Union reform treaty.
Cowen held talks with EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso ahead of an EU leaders summit in Brussels that is expected to be dominated by debate on how to proceed with the Lisbon Treaty. On Wednesday night, Britain gave the treaty a boost by becoming the first country to ratify it since Ireland's rejection. The leaders of Germany and France have called on remaining EU countries to ratify the treaty as well. The Lisbon Treaty, which aims to streamline decision making in the bloc, needs the backing of all members to be adopted.
