19.06.2008 - US envoy says Zimbabwe elections must be held

The US ambassador to Zimbabwe has said that a "negotiated government" in place of elections was not the answer to the country's crisis ahead of next week's presidential run-off.

James McGee said the poll was necessary for the will of the people to be heard. South Africa's Business Day newspaper claims that South African President Thabo Mbeki tried to persuade President Robert Mugabe to cancel the run-off and form a government of national unity with the leader of the opposition, MorganTsvangirai. A group of southern African ministers has said Zimbabwe's June 27 poll is unlikely to be free and fair.
