Last week, the treaty was rejected in an Irish referendum and the current EU summit is discussing the ensuing problems. However, Topolanek is rather sceptical about the current support for the treaty in Czech parliament and his party. "I certainly will not force anybody to vote for or against the treaty.

In the Czech right-wing coalition, including also the Greens (SZ) and the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL), the senior ruling ODS is the most critical of the Lisbon treaty. Czech President Vaclav Klaus, ODS founder and current honorary chairman, said in reaction to the Irish "no" that the ratification process can no longer continue. ODS senators filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court against the treaty. The court is to decide whether it is in harmony with the Czech Constitution. It is expected to issue a verdict in September or October. Topolanek indicated that he would try to convince ODS MPs to support the ratification.
