Within the next four months, an information lorry will visit about 20 cities and towns in ten EU countries. Spidla, who is responsible for employment, social affairs and equal opportunities in the European Commission, said many people in Europe still are not aware that they have the right to live without any discrimination over age, gender, religion, sexual orientation and ethnic origin. "The campaign is to give this message directly to the citizens and help them really use their right to equal treatment in everyday life," Spidla said. Spidla said every country was characterised by different problems.

The Eurobarometer survey released earlier this year showed that 58 percent of Czechs consider age-related discrimination frequent. Nearly one-fifth of Czechs said they were discriminated against in the past year and a majority of Czechs did not know how to defend themselves against discrimination, according to the survey. The campaign "For Diversity. Against Discrimination" is the fifth EU anti-discrimination campaign. The lorry will campaign mainly at music and film festivals, sports events and working opportunities fairs in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. The information lorry started the campaign in 2003. It has addressed half a million people until now. It previously visited the Czech Republic in 2004 and 2006. The Czech Republic has not yet passed an anti-discrimination law it was supposed to incorporate in its legislation by its EU accession in May 2004. It is the last of the EU's 27 countries not to have done so. If the parliament does not pass the bill soon, the country will probably face a lawsuit and a high fine from the EC.
