French President Nicolas Sarkozy has blamed the European Union's trade chief in part for Ireland's rejection of the EU reform treaty.
Sarkozy said Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelsohn had made too many painful farm concessions in recent trade negotiations, upsetting Irish farmers. Irish farmers had threatened to campaign against the Lisbon Treaty at last week's referendum if the government didn't heed their concerns. Meanwhile, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has said the problem posed by Ireland's rejection of the treaty cannot be solved quickly. Barroso also said he believed the Lisbon Treaty would ultimately be ratified by all members of the EU, as leaders of the bloc wrapped up two days of talks in Brussels on how to solve the predicament.
