German media is reporting that Berlin is preparing to send an extra 1,000 soldiers to reinforce its troops in Afghanistan.
The deployment would bring the number of Bundeswehr troops participating in the International Security Assistance Force mission to 4,500 soldiers. The plan has reportedly been on the cards for sometime, and was to be announced next Wednesday. Germany has come under pressure from NATO allies to increase its commitment to Afghanistan. Specifically, it has been called upon to redeploy forces from the more secure north to the restive south of the country.
