During the trial Mann implicated the son of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as a key member of the coup plot, and said the plan had the tacit approval of Spain and South Africa. The court was also told that London based millionaire Ely Calil bank rolled the plan, which aimed to secure access to the country's rich oil reserves. Mann was arrested in Zimbabwe in March 2004 with 70 mercenaries en route to Equatorial Guinea.
