European Union officials have condemned the violence in Zimbabwe that has forced opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to withdraw from the presidential run-off, saying the process was no longer valid. German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the withdrawal was a serious blow to the country and the entire region.

Brown and Mbeki focus on Mugabe ... President Thabo Mbeki, the region's designated mediator, has called for a diplomatic solution to the crisis. Germany's development minister has said she wants African nations to back UN Security Council consideration of the crisis. Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul has accused African nations of reacting too late and too indecisively to events in Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, more than 70 opposition supporters are reported to have been killed by Mugabe's ZANU-PF supporters in the last few days.
