Police said that illegal immigrants - mostly from Afghanistan, China, Turkey and Bangladesh - paid up to 12,000 euros to be smuggled into Europe. The European Commission estimates that there are up to eight million illegal immigrants living in Europe. About 90,000 were expelled last year.
