Despite a ceasefire, heavy fighting has erupted for a second day between pro- and anti-government supporters in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli.
Officials say eight people have been killed since Sunday, another 42 have been wounded. Clashes began overnight, when Sunni Muslim government supporters and Alawite opposition supporters exchanged machinegun fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Several homes and a petrol station were set on fire when the Lebanese army moved in. The violence comes amid stalled efforts by Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora to form a government of national unity.
