The survey evaluated the work of more than 600 journalists at 34 different media outlets in Germany and found that online research was producing more errors. The study's lead media scientist, Marcel Machill, said the ease of using the Internet was diverting attention away from primary sources to secondary and tertiary sources. Machill said the main reason given by journalists for relying on search engines instead of primary sources was the lack of time and personnel. Machill called on the media in Germany to employ special fact-checkers.
