United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has urged Zimbabwe to cancel a planned presidential election run-off for Friday.
Ban said that he had been in discussions with African leaders over the weekend and supported suggestions to postpone the vote until conditions on the ground were safe. On Sunday, opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai announced that he would withdraw from the poll due to violence directed against his supporters. Tsvangirai is now sheltering in the Dutch embassy in Zimbabwe's capital, Harare. He went there after police raided the headquarters of his Movement for Democratic Change. The MDC says nearly 90 of its supporters have been killed by militias backing President Robert Mugabe.
