Iran has condemned the European Union's newest sanctions over its controversial nuclear programme.
A foreign ministry spokesman in Tehran read a statement that called measures to freeze the assets of Iran's Bank Melli "illegal and absurd." Mohammad Ali Hosseini said that the sanctions would not help create a suitable atmosphere to solve the matter diplomatically and that Iran would not halt its nuclear work. Besides Bank Melli, which is Iran's largest bank, EU ministers added another 20 individuals and 15 organisations to the bloc's visa-ban and assets-freeze list to get Tehran to stop its nuclear enrichment activities.
