wishes that further countries like Croatia join the EU, but first it is necessary for the Union to put its institutional rules in order. Fries said France believes that the Lisbon treaty is "still on the table" and the process of ratification should continue. He said, however, the situation in approving the treaty should not be rushed in the Czech Republic, for instance. Fries said France wants to avoid a worsening of the situation after the Irish "No" to the treaty and does not want to accumulate any more problems. The Czech Republic has suspended the process of ratification of the treaty that the Senate, the upper house of parliament, sent to the Constitutional Court on the initiative of the senior ruling Civic Democrats (ODS) to see whether it is in harmony with the Czech constitution. Fries said France will continue negotiating with Croatia during its EU presidency. Czech diplomacy says Croatia's EU entry is its priority. Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek (ODS) said recently Croatia should not fall victim to the EU's institutional problems. The negotiations with Croatia could culminate during Czech EU presidency in the first half of 2009. Fries said the EU should set a reasonable deadline for finding a solution to the Irish issue. The EU will again consider further procedure after the Irish "No" in mid-October.
