Share of immigrants in Czech population growing-study, press ... injuries has been decreasing year-on-year in the Czech Republic, but this figure is only seemingly lower as the number of children in the country is dropping, too. On the other hand, the number of injuries per 100,000 kids has increased in the past 10 years from 20,000 to almost 30,000 a year, which is almost a 50-percent rise, Hejda said. "It means that one in three kids annually suffers an injury," Hejda added. Compared with the average accident rate in the Czech population, the number of children's injuries is twice higher. In 2006, 127,698 children's injuries during sports, 83,731 injuries at school and 22,082 during traffic accidents were reported. A total of 445,424 children were treated in surgeries and 39,547 kids and adolescents under 19 were hospitalised in 2006. Over 50 percent of the injuries were caused by a fall, especially in the case of smaller babies, one-fifth by traffic accidents (primarily teenagers). Hejda said prevention would help lower the number of children's accidents. Parents should, for instance, buy a quality sport equipment, including a helmet, for their kids. Smaller children should be transported by car only in a special safety seat, while the older should have safety belts fastened. Hejda also said parents should close an accident insurance.
