Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has survived a no-confidence vote, fending off opposition accusations of incompetence, mismanagement and yielding national sovereignty.
The motion, which was tabled by the opposition, was rejected by a vote of 280 to 162. The result came as little surprise since the prime minister's six-party coalition, led by his People's Power Party, controls two-thirds of the seats in the lower house. His seven cabinet ministers survived similar no-confidence votes. Despite the victory, observers say Samak will likely continue to face political hurdles including street protests that have hounded his government for the past month.
