The foreign ministers from the Group of Eight leading industrialised nations say the results of the first round of Zimbabwe's presidential election must be respected.
The foreign ministers said in a joint statement released at the end of talks in Japan that they could not accept the legitimacy of Zimbabwe's government if it did not reflect the will of the people. They also called on President Robert Mugabe's cabinet and the opposition to enter a dialogue in an effort to form a legitimate government. Japan, Italy, Canada, Russia, and France also called on Iran to respond constructively to the latest package of incentives to resolve a dispute over its nuclear ambitions.
