North Korea has destroyed the cooling tower at its Yongbyon nuclear reactor.
South Korean broadcaster MDC reported that the tower had been blown up before an audience of international television cameras. The blast was a symbolic move meant to show Pyongyang's intention to disarm. This comes a day after it handed over a long-delayed account of its nuclear programme. In return, US President George W. Bush agreed to remove North Korea from a US list of state sponsors of terrorism and issued a proclamation lifting some trade sanctions. But Bush warned Pyongyang to disclose all of its nuclear activities and continue to dismantle its programme. Otherwise, he said, it would face new consequences.
