North Korea has blown up the cooling tower of its atomic reactor in a controlled demolition.
The action has been seen as a dramatic symbol of thwe country's commitment to nuclear disarmament, one day after it handed over details of its atomic programmes. TV footage showed the 30-metre tower reduced to smoking rubble in seconds. The reactor at Yongbyon produced the plutonium for a weapons programme which culminated in a nuclear test in October 2006. In response, US President George W. Bush announced he was removing North Korea from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism and that he would lift some sanctions.
