The Basque regional parliament in Spain has approved plans for a referendum on self-determination.
It voted by a narrow majority of 34 votes to 33 to hold the poll on October 25. The vote is likely to lead to a confrontation with the federal government in Madrid which has condemned it as illegal. Basque leaders see the referendum as the first step of a proposed "road map" for new political relations between the northern region and Madrid.
