28.06.2008 - South Africa waters down UN Zimbabwe statement

South Africa has derailed a United Nations Security Council bill to declare Zimbabwe's election illegitimate.

Adoption of the British-drafted statement would have required approval from all 15 Security Council members. The South African ambassador argued that certifying elections was outside the Security Council's jurisdiction.
